a day dedicated to the sea

this morning --- AKA afternoon ;-), we set off for a tour of the neighboring islands of Murano (known for glass works), Buraano (known for hand made lace)  and Torcello (the first island to be settled in the lagoon). It was so great! We booked it a day or so ago once we had walked around and found what we wanted to see while we were here. It was a very large group tour where the guide mostly gave information over the intercom on the boat. I elected to sit outside in the back of the boat so i could be near the water. I love the smell of the sea and to feel the wind and taste the salt.
Here are some photos of the tours of the 3 islands.
our boat

i love sitting on  the outside

what a view
about 15 minutes into the first leg of our trip a storm began to unleash itself...

this new friend is from London-- we felt a little mist

some people huddled for protection (Ais in pink)

some people did not--- (the water was chilly going down my back)

But  I LOVED IT!!!!

lovely ladies
First stop the island of Murano (glass blowing)

one toasty oven- it even helped to dry me off (a very little bit)

making a vase
By the time we saw the demonstration and walked the sales room it was clear and pretty out.
On to Torcello (first island settled)

The church was built in 1200s  but has had a little face lift

This is the Chair of Atilla (not the Hun)... the legend goes that he who sits in the chair is destined to return to the island.

Then it was on to Burano (famous for handmade lace)
This island is very picturesque and colorful!

the sea theme continued with dinner-- we went to a restaurant and Chris ans Ais got to try seafood for all 3 courses.
Spaghetti with clams

fried shrimp and calamari

marinated salmon (uncooked)

one very happy guy
To finish the night in style we had a gondola ride...

the sunset was so beautiful

It was a glorious day at sea!!!

Today's flavors:
Chris- creme de Doge (Doge is the highest political office) and strawberry
Janelle- creme de Doge and pistachio
Ais- hazelnut and banana
